Apple unveils 128GB iPad for $799

Apple has announced a new version of its full-size iPad that doubles the maximum onboard storage to 128GB. Available in black or white, the 128GB iPad model will sport the same 9.7-inch Retina display, A6X processor and Lightning port.

Scheduled to ship on February 5, the new iPad will come with the recently released iOS 6.1 preinstalled. The Wi-Fi model will cost $799, while the Wi-Fi + Cellular model will be priced at $929.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) SVP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller said, "With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators, and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs."

It is not clear how well the 128GB model will fare, though various informal surveys seem to indicate some level of demand for it. On this front, Apple, in its press release, pointed to businesses that make use of large AutoCAD files or recording sound clips with multiple tracks as some potential users who will benefit from the additional capacity.
