Apple sued for monopolizing MP3 player market

Luxpro Corp., a Taiwanese electronics company, has sued Apple for attempting to monopolize the MP3 music player market and for unfair competition. A continuation of a long-running legal fight, Luxpro alleges that Apple illegally pressured its retail partners to stop selling the Luxpro music player.

Founded in December 2002, Luxpro launched its first MP3 player in 2004. A "Super Shuffle" was showcased in Germany at the March 2005 CeBIT trade show, which resulted in an injunction from Apple, through a German court, to prevent Luxpro from making, distributing or selling MP3 players. The injunction was ultimately reversed and upheld in Taiwan's Supreme Court. In its complaint, Luxpro characterizes Apple's legal methods as "abusive" and "calculated to stomp out competition." It appears this battle is far from over and could wage on for several years.
