Apple to shutter its Mac OS X download site come Jan. 6
Talk about eating your own dog food, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) says it will be pulling its Mac OS X download site come Jan. 6, 2011, the day that its new Mac App Store will be launched. An email on this issue was reportedly sent out to registered Mac developers by Ron Okamoto, Apple's head of developer relations.
According to various sites that published the contents of his message, Okamoto wrote about how Apple believes the Mac App Store to be the "best destination for users to discover, purchase and download apps." As such, Apple will be directing users to the Mac App Store to "explore the range of apps available" there.
This move could leave some developers in a lurch however. As Computerworld pointed out, some popular software could run afoul of guidelines published for the Mac App Store, some of which were interpreted as forbidding system utilities or changing the UI (User Interface) of the Mac OS X. For users though, the largest impact would probably be how the Mac App Store will only support Mac OS X 10.6, or Snow Leopard. Because of this, users with older Mac OS X versions would likely find it more difficult to find software to download after Jan. 6.
