Apple release dozens of security updates for Mac OS X
Apple has released the largest security update in nearly a year, releasing a staggering 55 patches mostly destined for its flagship Mac OS X operating system. About 32 of the bugs were related to open-source components or software not originally created by Apple, as well as four related to Apple's implementation of Sun's Java.
Much of the attention was drawn by a vulnerability in Safari, for which Apple took no action for at least six months. This was narrated by one of the three researchers credited with reporting the bug, Brian Masterbrook. Apple was resting on its laurels, despite the fact that a mere visit to a malicious site was adequate to exploit the flaw; Masterbrook decided to post information on the bug as well as a workaround in a January 11 blog post.
