Apple iPad responsible for 89 percent of all tablet traffic in May
The Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad was responsible for a staggering 89 percent of all online traffic from tablets in the month of May. That's according to research firm comScore, which conducted the study in 13 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Singapore.
Additionally, the iPad accounted for 33.5 percent of total non-computer device traffic in Canada, followed by 31.8 percent in Brazil. In the United States, 21.3 percent of non-computer traffic in May came from iPads.
The statistics shouldn't come as a surprise given the 25 million iPads sold since it was launched in 2010. What's revealing is that, in the United States, 91.9 percent of Internet traffic from the iPad was generated over Wi-Fi as opposed to just 8.1 percent via mobile networks. Given the huge market share of iPads, existing Wi-Fi networks may be strained to the breaking point, as consumers and businesses clamor for wireless LAN access.
When I interviewed Ben Gibson of Aruba Networks in April, he urged businesses to move fast to deploy pervasive wireless. The report by comScore appears to validate that advice.
