Even as cloud computing gains momentum, the market for cloud databases is still "in its early stage," according to Forrester Research Analyst Noel Yuhanna. Not surprisingly, many are concerned about security, scalability and performance. Despite these reservations, Yuhanna noted that 18 percent of enterprises are looking at cloud databases.

One model gaining popularity is the implementation of Oracle 11g and IBM DB2 on Amazon's EC2 Cloud. Another approach would be native Cloud databases such as SimpleDB and the Google App Engine. Finally, Microsoft Azure brings up the rear, in which a traditional relational SQL engine is hosted and run from the clouds.

For now, mission-critical applications are taking the back seat as vendors focus on trust and reliability. As such, it will probably be some time yet before enterprise adoption takes off.
