AMD unveils six-core Istanbul processors

AMD, on Monday, unveiled new six-core server chips built on the 45-nanometer process. Code-named Istanbul, the five new processors will come with clock speeds of up to 2.6GHz with a power consumption of 75 watts, making them the fastest server chips released by the company so far. According to AMD, Istanbul yields 30 percent faster performance on the same power draw as the Shanghai chips currently on the market.

The Istanbul is but the first in a series of processors with more than four-cores planned by AMD. According to AMD's road map, another processor--which is code named Magny-Cours--is scheduled to be officially released in the first quarter of 2010. It will come with between eight and 12-cores. In the meantime, the prices for the Istanbul processors will range from between $455 to $2,649.
