AMD (NYSE: AMD) has revealed that the company is putting together a platform that will compete with Intel's (NASDAQ: INTC) Ultrabooks. This was revealed in an interview by The Australian with AMD's Australia and New Zealand country manager Brian Slattery. Given the intense amount of interest in thin and light laptops of late, this hardly comes as a surprise.

According to a report on Tom's Hardware, the new form factor could debut as early as next month in Australia. The specifics of AMD's ultra-thin concept were not divulged, though the chip maker will likely utilize some variant of its APU (accelerated processing unit) concept, which sees the integration of Radeon HD graphics with an AMD CPU.

This would conceivably give AMD's platform more graphical capability compared with Intel's lackluster HD 3000 chipset for graphics. Though, Intel is poised to rectify the current situation with dramatically improved graphics processing in its upcoming Ivy Bridge processors.

Unlike the approach adopted by Intel, AMD intends to refrain from specifying the parameters and configurations for ultra-thin laptops. Given the more than 60 Intel Ultrabooks currently slated for release in 2012, this may be a much-needed bait to entice device manufacturers to consider its platform.
