As we near the home stretch on the long road to Barcelona, AMD's other chip offerings are starting to look a bit long in the tooth. To entice would-be users of their chips, AMD is announcing price cuts across its Athlon 64 product lines, bringing the company's dual-core Athlon 64 X2 and Athlon 64 FX-70 processors into the sub-$200 range, with many low-end chips falling below $100. The company's high-end Athlon 64 X2, the 3.0-Ghz 6000+, now retails for $178, making it significantly cheaper than the competing 2.13-Ghz E6400 from Intel. AMD is hoping that this round of competitive price cuts will help it maintain momentum leading up to the launch of Barcelona in August. With Intel widely believed to be planning price cuts of its own, however, AMD may not possess the price advantage for long.
