AMD's next steps: quad-core, co-processors
June 1, 2006 — 7:01pm ET
There's an endless supply of one-upsmanship between AMD and Intel, but AMD now has made an impressive move, announcing a true four-core server chip (not just two dual-core chips) due by mid-2007. AMD also said it's enlisted companies like Cray, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun to prepare various kinds of co-processor chips. Industry analysts say AMD's on the right track and they'll probably solve some power issues at the same time.
