AMD introduces new triple, quad-core laptop chips
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) mid-week announced new mobile processors for laptops--including the first triple-core and quad-core laptop processors--as it ups the ante on price and performance in order to compete with arch-rival Intel (NASDAQ: INTC). The Phenom II processors are clocked at between 1.6GHz and 2.3GHz and draws between 25 watts and 45 watts of power.
According to Leslie Sobon, vice president of marketing at AMD, between 130 and 150 products are designed around these new chips, a record for the company. Operating at between 1.3GHz and 1.7GHz, these chips come in single-core and dual-core variants, and draw just between 12 to 15 watts of power.
