AMD drops power-efficient, 65nm chips

AMD released three new products today: new versions of the Athlon 64 3500+ and the 3800+ single-core chips and the all new, dual-core Athlon 64 X2 6000+. All three chips were designed for low energy consumption and perhaps, more important for AMD, all three chips were manufactured using AMD's new 65nm process. "Using the reduced line widths enabled by 65nm technology, AMD can produce more processors on a 300mm wafer while manufacturing processors designed for low-power consumption, reinforcing AMD's commitment to energy-efficient computing," the company said, in a statement. AMD has been getting awfully aggressive during the last month: dropping prices across its desktop computing line, touting the speed of its upcoming, native quad-core parts and now this. If AMD is going to compete with Intel, it will certainly have to keep the heat on, at least until "Barcelona" hits.
