AMD announces new six-core Opteron processors

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has released five more processors to its six-core Opteron lineup early this week. Three of these processors are manufactured using a 45-nanometer process and were intended to be used in servers with four, six, or eight processors.

The Six-Core AMD Opteron HE processors consumes just 55 watts of power. AMD says they are designed to address the rising demand for systems with both increased performance and greater power efficiency for cloud computing and web-serving environments. They are available in new ProLiang G6 systems from Hewlett-Packard, while systems from other OEMs are expected to come to market through the third quarter.
