Amazon champions 'Frustration-Free Packaging'

In the hope of eliminating annoying blister packs and plastic-coated wire ties, giant web retailer Amazon has started a "Frustration-Free Packaging" initiative in the United States. The idea will combat what Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos coined as "wrap rage"--in which impenetrable packaging drives one to tears upon successful opening, or worse yet, an injury by accident.

Memory cards are singled out as a regular offender, as they are are typically encased in over-sized clamshells to deter shoplifting. The Frustration-Free Packaging initiative is starting with an initial pool of 19 products from a range of manufacturers such as Fisher-Price, Mattel, Microsoft and Transcend. This comes just in time for Christmas, I suppose, though I'm not sure who will be buying if the grim outlook in IT corporate spending is any refelection of consumer habits. Amazon aims to expand the program internationally next year.
