Advanced variants of Conficker spotted
A new variant of the Conficker worm has been released, which could signal a major shift in the modus operandi of this malware. Named Conficker B++, the new variant utilizes new techniques to download updates that are not susceptible to the actions of an ad hoc group called the Conficker Cabal. So far, the group has kept Conficker under control by cracking its algorithm and then moving to register static Internet domains that infected machines will scan for new updates.
All the variants of Conficker have infected an estimated 10.5 million computers to date. In fact, Microsoft has gone as far as to offer a $25,000 bounty to anyone able to furnish information leading to the arrest and conviction to the creators of this malware.
