A7 chip on iPad Air is faster, performs better
One surprising revelation when the iPad Air was announced was its use of the same A7 chip that powers the iPhone 5S. This is because the different display resolutions between the company's smartphone and tablet had necessitated the use of a more powerful processor on the iPad in the past. However, the latest report coming in confirms that the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air do indeed use the same silicon--with a couple of caveats.
As observed by Ars Technica, the iPad Air's A7 runs at a base CPU clock speed of 1.4GHz, which is up very slightly from the 1.3GHz of the iPhone 5S. And according to exhaustive tests done by AnandTech, the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air can both operate at their maximum clock speed for about two minutes, after which the iPhone 5S throttles sharply down to about 1GHz to prevent overheating. Similarly, the A7 in the iPad Air also gradually decreases in clock speed from about the same point in time, though it is generally able to maintain a higher level of performance throughout. In a nutshell, the A7 on the iPad Air has higher thermal headroom that allows it to outperform the A7 on the iPhone 5S.
Where GPU performance is concerned, it was found that the iPad Air's GPU is faster than that of the iPhone 5S and the previous generation of iPad tablet. Overall performance gains are relatively modest though and depending on the test run, gains ranges between 20 percent and 75 percent quicker than the fourth-gen iPad.
