Trend Micro has launched the 2009 version of its flagship consumer product suite. Faster speed is a given, but it also touts over 40 percent lower memory usage and half the boot-up time of last year's version. Article

McAfee touts its 'cloud-based' defenses against malware

McAfee made an announcement earlier this week about changes it will implement in how it delivers virus definitions to client machines. Via its new McAfee Artemis Technology method, suspicious and unidentified code that is harmful will be collected and uploaded to servers run by McAfee for immediate and automated review. The result is that the cloud is leveraged to create a virus definition that is then delivered "on-the-fly." Having said that, the current process in which virus definitions are downloaded regularly will continue. Indeed, with up to 3,500 pieces of daily malware, and a three-fold increase projected over this year alone, it's no wonder that competitors such F-Secure and Trend Micro are working on their own cloud-based initiatives.

Trend Micro finished with WildList, VB100 certification

Antivirus vendor Trend Micro is turning its back on well-known WildList and VB100 certifications, citing that the test methodology is no longer adequate. By focusing on pattern-matching, areas like behavior-based detection or even actual performance of tested security software are not adequately assessed. Article

Barracuda wants to buy Sourcefire

Antispam appliance vendor Barracuda has revealed that it made a $186 million offer for Sourcefire. This is 13 percent more than the company's current stock price, though half of what it was worth a year ago. Founded by the creator of the well-known SNORT intrusion detection and prevention software, Sourcefire also owns the ClamAV open source antivirus project, which it acquired in August last year.

Barracuda leverages on ClamAV in its appliance products and it is not known if the offer is a direct result of the looming threat of litigation from competitor Trend Micro, which claims that ClamAV violates a patent it holds. In an open letter, Barracuda did note that it is "uniquely positioned to address and remedy" this situation.
