Stamping out domain tasting

The sharp increase in speculation over domain names is causing a backlash. As every CIO knows, a company's domain name is a treasure, but havoc can be caused by typo-squatters--those who create and register websites with misspelled variations of company names.

Millions of names also are routinely tied up in a constant churn of registering and returning names before fees are charged--a practice known as "domain tasting" that is used to test out advertising and marketing possibilities.

Now the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the organization based in California that manages domain names--is considering steps to stop the practice. The board of ICANN will vote in Paris next month on a proposal to severely limit the number of domain names that can be returned without a fee, but the organization is facing resistance from domain name registrars who are against ending the grace period.

New .mobi domain is controversial but growing

There's a new domain in town: .mobi, and it's being sold by Ireland's Mobile Top Level Domain Ltd. as approved by ICANN. They already sold 88,000 domains in the first two days, officials said. There are many questions about whether the domains are or will be gobbled by cybersquaters, and whether a .mobi domain can do anything that a .com can't. But MTLD says its sites are easier to format for mobile devices. (MTLD's site is not easy to find; it's http://pc.mtld.mobi.)

Senate holding ICANN hearings soon

Should ICANN force VeriSign to do more for .com security? Yes, according to Network Solutions. Senate hearings tomorrow will focus on the issue of top-level domains and VeriSign's relative lock on the .com domain. Network Solutions recently issued a report detailing VeriSign's alleged security problems. The hearings are also expected to lead into the issue of whether Internet control should be so U.S.-centric instead of relying on an international UN-sponsored group.

SPOTLIGHT: U.S. extends ICANN contract for domains

ICANN will continue to manage the Internet's domain name system until at least 2011, based on a new contract extension with the U.S. Department of Commerce. The ever-controversial Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers still faces the problem of its main contract expiring Sept. 30 of this year, with the major question being whether ICANN will live in public or private hands. ICANN tackles future of the Internet

The Internet Committee for Assigned Names and Numbers is holding its 25th major meeting this week in New Zealand. On the docket: Why are people so distrustful of ICANN these days? Some say it's because the organization no longer stands up for ordinary Internet users but rather is swayed by companies and governments. Internationalization, oversight and security of the domain name system will also be controversial topics for debate at the meeting.

ICANN to consider defenses against attacks

ICANN's security committee will meet in New Zealand later this month to discuss new ways of stopping distributed denial-of-service attacks. Such attacks are not only becoming commonplace, they're also becoming more powerful and easier to launch, experts say. A flare of attacks in January and February would have crashed most Web sites, but luckily it was contained early.
