IT fails at 'green'

There's a great deal of talk in the industry about making data centers more environmentally sound but it seems that it's just talk at the moment. A new survey finds that despite the best intentions, few IT system managers actually have any specific plans in place and most give their own operations failing grades in reducing energy consumption. The reason for not starting "green IT" programs, say the IT executives, is lack of funding and operational resources, particularly due to this year's tight budgets, according to a survey by the Business Performance Management Forum. "The results of the study point to a big gap between what IT leadership knows it needs to do and what it has accomplished to date in terms of environmental responsibility," BPM Forum Director Derek Kober told eWeek.

For more on what's wrong with 'green':
- See this eWeek article

Microsoft aims to change the CPM sector

Corporate Performance Management (CPM), also known as business performance management (BPM), is expected to grow exponentially, according to a new survey from independent consultancy BPM Partners, with 70 percent of the more than 500 respondents having projects in progress or in the planning stage. CPM essentially enables businesses to define strategic goals and then measure and manage performance against those. Its core processes include modeling, analysis and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) linked to organizational strategy. When Microsoft's Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 hits the street later this year, analysts expect it to have a dramatic effect on the CPM sector, since it targets not only the midmarket but the entire business spectrum. PPS is likely to make its way into business as a financial tool, but after the first release, Microsoft has ambitious plans to take performance management throughout a business into areas such as sales and operations planning, human workforce planning and sales and marketing planning.

Read more about CPM:
- read the article in The Australian

Doing BPM right

Effectively measuring business performance isn't easy, but business performance management (BPM) technology can help. Good BPM tools and methodologies can help organizations measure their progress and improve performance. That means getting an executive sponsor, setting goals, determining key performance indicators, defining technology requirements, choosing a technology only after assessing what you need from it and how you want it integrated, avoiding vendor hype, gaining user buy-in, finding an engagement manager to manage the project to completion, educating your users, and analyzing your results.

BPM: A window into business performance

Corporate executives have a habit of wanting to know, at a glance, how their companies are performing in various areas. In today's competitive environment, Excel spreadsheets don't do the trick anymore--they are far too simplistic and don't provide information in real-time. For many companies, the answer is business performance management (BPM). This software, from companies like Business Objects, Hyperion, Cognos, Oracle and SAP, makes sense of relevant data about customers, competitors, internal operations and the marketplace--providing executives with the information they need to make the right decisions. Core processes include modeling, analysis and monitoring of key performance indicators, and links to organizational strategy. To drive BPM across your organization, it's important to work from the top down as well as the bottom up, and be able to guarantee all stakeholders that the integrity of the data and reporting systems will be preserved.

Learn more about BPM:
- read the article at CIO Decisions

ALSO:
- read this about focusing on neglected areas using BPM
- and this on why IT must lead the BPM charge
