Geeks design telecommuting robot

In this day and age, there are relatively few tasks that you perform in the office every day that you can't accomplish from home. Thanks to email, you can stay in the loop wherever you are; thanks to high-speed Internet, you can work on projects in real-time; and thanks to instant messaging, you can get in touch with co-workers instantly if something comes up. Just about the only things that you can't do are saunter around the office, physically attend meetings and hang out in the cubicles of your co-workers.

One enterprising geek, however, wasn't content to simply telecommute. When Sybase iAnywhere programmer Ivan Bowman moved from Waterloo, Ontario (home of iAnywhere headquarters) to Halifax, Nova Scotia--over 800 miles away--he left something behind: IvanAnywhere, a robot that simulates Ivan's presence in the office. Consisting of a webcam, a touchscreen and a pair of speakers on wheels, IvanAnywhere wanders the halls of iAnywhere's offices in Waterloo while the real Ivan controls its movements from his living room in Halifax. Thanks to IvanAnywhere, Bowman can attend meetings, read whiteboards, visit offices and even hang out in the break room. "We are all so used to Ivan, they don't even give it a second thought," says Glenn Paulley, Bowman's boss and the man responsible for the idea behind IvanAnywhere.

Sybase iAnywhere adds IM to mobility suite

Sybase iAnywhere announced today that it will add mobile instant messaging and mobile presence capabilities to its Information Anywhere suite of applications. In addition to the mobile email, collaboration, security, device management and enterprise application functionalities that Information Anywhere offers, users will now be able to send and receive IMs on the go. The new IM app will also allow business users to check the mobile "presence" of co-workers who might be away from their desks. The new IM client supports all of the popular mobile platforms as well as a variety of IM protocols, including Microsoft Communications Server, Lotus Notes Sametime server and the XMPP protocol (used by Google talk and ICQ). The real draw here, however, is Information Anywhere's security and archiving abilities, which will allow IT departments to deploy an in-house mobile IM solution while meeting all of the enterprise's security, compliance and auditing requirements. "There's business communication going on over IM, sales communications going on over IM," Sybase iAnywhere product manager Bryan Whitmarsh told DailyTechRag. "The whole idea is being able to control the solution from the enterprise."

HTC plans BlackBerry rival this year

High Tech Computer, the Taiwanese company that designs and builds the majority of Windows Mobile smartphones for the major vendors, plans to launch a BlackBerry competitor later this year. The device, code-named Excalibur, will include a QWERTY keypad and will be designed for use with push email services. Pricing isn't clear, nor is the U.S. availability timeframe, although it's due in Europe first. (Is push email still a big deal? Email me if there are any methods you prefer)

Microsoft, Adobe, Eclipse lead IDE survey

Microsoft's Visual Studio is still the most widely used development environment, but IBM's Rational Application Developer is the better product, according to a new survey of 1,200 users by Evans Data. Tools from the Eclipse Foundation, Sybase and Sun Microsystems are also developer favorites. (What's your favorite integrated development environment and why? Email me.)

Oracle pulls IBM from Siebel CRM OnDemand

Customers of Oracle's CRM OnDemand software, which uses Siebel technology, might not be surprised to learn that IBM is no longer their back-end data center provider. Most of the service is now hosted by Oracle's own platforms, and the change will be finished throughout this summer, officials said. IBM and Siebel became partners before Oracle bought Siebel, but IBM and Oracle aren't exactly best pals, so the change was really just a matter of time.
