Dell, unveils tiny green PC

Dell sure seems to be getting more adventurous in terms of design these days while also increasingly focusing on eco-friendly technology. So it's not too surprising that Dell's latest experiment is a green-friendly PC. The tiny desktop PC (think Mac Mini size) uses 70 percent less energy than the average tower, comes shipped in recycled and recyclable packaging and is constructed using earth-friendly materials like bamboo and recycled bottles, milk jugs and detergent cases. Luckily, you won't have to drop a whole lot of green to snag it later this year: Dell hopes to sell the as-yet-unnamed PC for between $500 and $700.

Survey: Virtualization to Impact Desktops and Apps

While virtualization is very popular in the datacenter these days, The 451 Group predicts the next wave of virtualization technology will benefit desktops and applications, leading to greater efficiency and power savings. "By allowing partitioning, emulation and aggregation at every layer of the software stack, virtualization is transforming enterprise IT from the datacenter server farm to the desktop PC, thin client or remote laptop at the enterprise edge," said Rachel Chalmers, senior analyst for enterprise software at The 451 Group and lead author of the report.

For more:
- read the report in Tekrati's article

PC theft puts healthcare data at risk

A desktop PC theft at an Ohio-based health-care provider's office has put the confidential data of tens of thousands of clients in five states in serious risk. According to Electronic Registry Systems Inc. (ERS), the data theft took place in late November and was part of a building break-in incident that involved other offices within the office building where ERS is located. The company, which services health care data for more than 300 regional hospitals, cancer centers and university hospitals, says the data should remain safe and secure given the security authentication levels built into its data system.

Dell stays married to direct model approach

In an initiative to increase laptop market share, Dell is taking a gamble that could either help or hurt the vendor. While most laptop vendors currently outsource laptop manufacturing, Dell is keeping it in house, just as it has with its longtime desktop PC manufacturing process. It's a decision that industry experts say could work in the vendor's favor, as it allows Dell to provide a level of customization that other vendors can't match.

For more on why Dell is staying with its direct model strategy:
- read the article at the New York Times

Yesterday, we reported that public accounting firm for Chevron lost a laptop containing confidential employee data. Today, Unisys is posting a $50,000 reward for the recovery of a stolen desktop PC housing data on 38,000 veterans who were treated at medical facilities in Pennsylvania. The machine went missing from the subcontractor's office; Unisys was hired by the veteran's agency to handle insurance information collection. The company is working with the FBI and VA's office of the Inspector General in their quest to get the PC and data back in safe hands.
