CIOs must 'get' Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is moving so fast that most CIOs probably can't keep up. While you might leave this bundle of knowledge in the hands of your younger staffers, don't be left behind. Emailed newsletters headlined with the label "From the Desk of" are quickly becoming obsolete. Instead there are other options:

Blogging: Learn how to do it.

Social networking: This means Facebook and collaborating online. Make sure you take Facebook seriously because your staff already does.

Unified communications: That means Voice over IP and network/phone integration.

Change is always tough to absorb but it's necessary to get with the program now.

For more on Web 2.0 and the CIO:
- See this CIO.com article

New technologies increase security needs

Newer technologies like Voice over IP (VoIP) and instant messaging can raise the risk factor for enterprise systems very fast, and some question whether security can keep up. And that's not just a minority opinion: according to a recent survey by Infosecurity Europe, 93 percent of companies believe that instant messaging and IP use is moving faster than the security necessary to contain them. Because IM allows encrypted data, it could be an undetectable source of data leakage, and VoIP has similar security issues regarding encrypted traffic. It is critical for the information security industry to stay on top of the situation and communicate with policy makers to keep threats at bay.

Read more about the security threats posed by IM and VoIP:
- read the article at Computing

IM: Not just for kids

Instant messaging (IM) is more useful in the corporate world than you might imagine. To make the most of it, make effective use of collaboration software as one entity, seamlessly using email, IM, voice over IP (VoIP) and discussion groups within a single environment. Also get over the notion that IM is a distraction for workers; it can actually help workers conduct business more efficiently. And finally, manage IM services the way you would manage any other applications, with archiving, authorization, compliance, content inspection, integration capabilities, manageability and security.

Learn more about how to use IM effectively at work:
- read the article at Computing

ALSO:
- read this on the downside of instant messaging

VoIP networks can be difficult to manage

Although Voice over IP (VoIP) is infiltrating the business world at a fast clip, many IT decision-makers don't have the personnel or internal skill to pro-actively manage VoIP networks. It's critical to gain these skills, as IP is being adopted as the protocol of choice in businesses, especially since IP network failures cause total communications failures in the enterprise.

Read more about the skills necessary to manage VoIP in the enterprise:
- read the article at Computing
- and check out our sister publication, the Business VoIP report

Security is a balancing act

CIOs are pressured from all sides and that's not likely to change: more and more states are requiring that organizations disclose when they have experienced data leaks, making their efforts to pinpoint those leaks immediately critical. At the same time, CIOs must continue to find ways to fend off increasingly sophisticated types of spam, phishing attacks and other malicious attempts to gain entry into corporate systems--while incorporating newer, hacker-prone technologies like Voice over IP (VoIP). Help is on the way, in the form of an array of 802.11-based standards, but even that won't be enough.

For more about balancing risk against opportunity:
- read this CIO Today article

Face threats head on

Even with the requisite complement of data protection software, your data and networks might not be as secure as you think, thanks to more aggressive, smarter viruses and other security threats. One type of "smart" attack can occur within root kits, a type of Trojan horse software implanted into a computer to capture passwords and message traffic. These attacks will allow a virus to make its way into the depths of the operating system, allowing it to interfere with the anti-virus software before it has a chance to detect the threat. Other emerging threats include embedded image spam, more threats around Voice over IP (VoIP), and malicious code concealed in video content.

Read on for more threats to your business:
- see the article at Vnunet.com
- and for even more information, check out this article at SpywareHunter

What lies ahead in VoIP capabilities

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is no longer a babe in the technology woods. As some IT analysts and experts note, putting voice over IP opens a whole new world when it comes to software architecture and integrated application capabilities. They'll come a day when an application will initiate calls to the proper personnel to get sign-offs on orders and data processing, and that day is getting closer by the second. In fact one vendor believes such voice/data integration will cement presence in all applications by 2010.

To see what VoIP will soon bring to the enterprise:
-read this BPM Today article.
