Why CIO pay packages are increasing

Along with new business responsibilities come a big increase in pay for CIOs, according to Baseline's ranking of high-paid information-technology executives. This year the list includes 39 millionaires, up from 21 last year. Many of those on the list manage other operations beyond technology, including logistics and customer service. For example Alltel's Jeff Fox, who made $9 million last year, is in charge of technology, but also is president of the company's shared services group. And, he's only 44--one of the youngest on the list. Looking for a piece of this million dollar action? A top-notch CIO needs to know more details about how each part of the company operates than his counterparts have to know about IT, according to John Stevenson, who has been CIO at Sharp Electronics and Avaya and is a former president of the Society for Information Management. "You need to have a dose of knowledge of every other executive position to be successful," he told Baseline.

For more on CIO pay packages:
- see this Baseline article

Microsoft, HP shake on massive partnership

Microsoft and HP have shaken hands for what could potentially be one of the biggest partnerships to hit the IT sector. The two tech giants are heralding a $300 million dollar deal to jointly market their services and products, describing the collaboration as a "milestone" in their business relationship. For IT leaders, it could be the dawn of greater interoperability beyond just server and desktop environments. The two will offer products in four new areas, one of which is likely a big focus for many organizations today--unified messaging.

For more on the tech giants' plans:
- read this article at DailyTechRag

New way for stopping denial-of-service attacks

A multi-million dollar security research effort in the works for the past two years is producing some new tech strategies for fighting sophisticated denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that are gaining in popularity with hackers. Partly funded by Information Society Technologies, a European Union group, the research effort is developing an architecture featuring a new type of firewall that deploys both software and hardware at the edge of a provider's network, rather than inside the network environment. The solution detects anomalies and unusual network activity, such as unexpected bandwidth draw, and prevents access to computers so they can't be used as part of a bot army.

For more on the new tool for fighting DDoS:
- check out this article at CIO Today
