'Hyperconnected' users growing

A new wave of information workers are using multiple devices and applications, meaning that CIOs must begin making plans to accommodate this next-generation workforce. A worldwide study done for Nortel by IDC, covering nearly 2,400 working adults in 17 countries, found that 16 percent were "hyperconnected" users--those using at least seven devices and nine applications. This included use of gadgets ranging from phones to laptops to PDAs and even car-based systems.

Vito Mabrucco, senior vice president at IDC Canada, said the increasing demand for connectivity and applications, as well as the blurring of personal and business use of technology, is expected to tax telecommunications networks, broadband networks, and high-speed networks.

This week, Nortel and Microsoft announced the fruits of their Innovative Communication Alliance, unveiling no less than four unified communications products. The four products are: the Nortel Converted Office, which integrates the selected models of Nortel Communications Server with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007; the UC Integrated Branch, for extending unified communications to remote offices; the Carrier Hosted Unified Communications Solutions, which is designed for service providers; and the Nortel Multimedia Conferencing 5.0 for an audio conferencing system. Already, there are more than 600 wins for the above products since the alliance's set up two years ago. Features planned for the future include fully hosted unified communications as well as Contact Center Integration.

Cisco, Avaya battle for enterprise telecom space

IntelliComm Analytics researchers say Cisco and Avaya are in a dead heat to capture the hearts and minds of corporate CIOs. Avaya has 20.9 percent of product revenue, and Cisco is a smidge behind with 20.9 percent. Nortel picked up the bronze at 12.1 percent. TMCnet reports that the strong performance by Avaya explains why the firm was such an acquisition target. Nortel, in the meantime, has been dealing with a stubborn accounting scandal and is struggling to keep pace with the front-runners.

To read more:
- see the article on the study

IT Hiring on the Rise, CIOs Report

Robert Half Technology this month released it Technology IT Hiring Index and Skills Report. The numbers are promising. Seventeen percent of executives surveyed plan to add IT staff in the next three months and 2 percent foresee personnel cutbacks. The net 15 percent increase, the highest since the fourth quarter of 2001, is up three percentage points from the previous quarter's projection. The company surveyed some 1,400 CIOs from U.S. companies with 100 or more employees. Some key findings:

Firms in the Pacific region plan the strongest hiring activity in the third quarter

Business growth remains the top reason companies are adding IT staff

Help desk/end-user support is the job category experiencing the most growth

CIOs in the wholesale sector are most optimistic about employment gains

The skills in most demand are Microsoft Windows administration (Server 2000/2003), network administration (Cisco, Nortel) and database management (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2).

For more information:
- check out the release
