New security holes found in Internet Explorer

Two separate security holes were found in Microsoft's Internet Explorer this week, one in Internet Explorer 7 and another in Internet Explorer 6. The vulnerability in IE7 was discovered by "sirdarckcat" and is detailed at security firm Secunia's website. Rated as moderately critical, it can be exploited to perform spoofing by autonomously switching the location of another frame. The IE6 vulnerability, on the other hand, can be used by an unauthenticated attacker to execute code in the security context of another domain. Microsoft says that it is currently investigating both reports, and is not aware of any attempts, at the moment, to exploit them.

To read up more the two Internet Explorer vulnerabilities:
- check out this eWeek article

Safari 3.1 is first to support HTML 5

Upping the ante in the ongoing browser wars, Apple has released Safari version 3.1 for both OS X and Windows. The company claims that the new version "loads web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2" and runs JavaScript "up to six times faster" than the competition. What's more, the browser is the first to support HTML 5 (video and audio tags) and CSS animations. Other new features include support for CSS web fonts and HTML 5 offline storage, as well as improved SVG support.

For more on Safari 3.1:
- see this Ars Technica article
- and hit up Apple's website for the free download

Symantec reports on Vista account control flaws

Symantec is still spending some time looking at the upcoming Vista system, identifying some bugs and security issues. This week it's focused on relating how the Microsoft OS has some security flaws within the User Account Control (UAC) feature. According to Symantec, an attacker could commandeer a Vista PC using IE 7 by burying a nasty file on a Vista UAC when a malicious Web site is visited. According to the security vendor's report, the malware could provide unauthorized access to the PC for malicious intentions. Microsoft, for its part, says the vulnerability is tied to a user logging in with an administrator account, a practice it doesn't recommend. The Symantec report is the second of three the vendor will be releasing on Vista, due out in January. The third report, supposedly coming this week as well, will highlight security issues with the Vista core.

For more on Vista vulnerability issues:
- check out this article at CNet News.com
