Bill may strengthen security requirements for databases

A bill introduced in the U.S. Senate this week will strengthen requirements for all online databases that hold personal information. The Personal Data Privacy and Security Act of 2007, currently in discussion, would basically hold IT managers responsible for security breaches when personal information is stolen. The law would require companies with databases containing sensitive personal information to implement stringent data privacy and security programs and to notify law enforcement officials whenever access of that data by unauthorized individuals is detected.

Read more about the new database security bill:
- read the article at BetaNews

Symantec's future security strategy

It's not like Symantec doesn't consider viruses, worms and Trojans as enterprise security threats. The vendor surely does. But it also sees the dawn of a new age of information sharing as one that presents some serious security concerns as well. That's why Symantec is morphing its security products toward protecting data that's shared during online collaboration. Its emerging line of new tools and services--packaged as Security 2.0--feature modules for database security and functionality to protect communications such as email and instant messaging.

For more on Symantec's security focus:
- read the article at BPM Today

Related Article: It's been a busy year for Symantec. Article

The hidden dangers in embedded databases

Databases could be harboring some potential security issues and vulnerabilities, according to one security expert. IT staffs tend to sometimes forget to batten down the hatches or re-check that security is tightly in place. As some companies have found, a good database audit can highlight potential problems and help get fixes in place; but as one analyst warns, it's the embedded database that holds the most risk. They don't have the conventional security measures that traditional databases have.

For more on database security issues:
- read this Techworld article
