BlackBerry users happy over patent settlement

It cost Research In Motion (RIM) $612.5 million dollars, but the maker of the popular BlackBerry device believes it is well worth the cost to keep its 3 million users up and running. After all, there's still a huge market to be tapped. Experts say that while NTP, the technology patent holder, had wanted close to $1 billion, the agreed upon settlement amount is a reasonable agreement.

For more on the close of the patent fight:
- read this article at CNNMoney

Judge urges settlement in BlackBerry dispute

While many likely thought patent dispute between Research In Motion (RIM), the vendor behind the BlackBerry device, and NTP, which claims to own some key device patents, would be settled by now, the two sides don't seem any closer to coming to an agreement. But that may likely change this week as the judge hearing the case has pretty much said that a settlement would benefit the two vendors more than any court ruling he hands down. In fact, he pretty much said his ruling won't make anyone happy.

Small reprieve for BlackBerry users

The BlackBerry you're holding is still working thanks to a judge who stayed execution on Friday of an order that could have terminated service for every Research In Motion (RIM) customer. But don't get too comfortable; the judge says he could move toward injunction at a later date over the patent dispute regarding RIM and NTP, the patent holding company. According to experts, the judge is likely going to put great pressure on both players to agree to some sort of settlement that wouldn't impact the millions of BlackBerry users.

SPOTLIGHT: No settlement in sight for BlackBerry dispute

If you've secretly been thinking that the Research in Motion-NTP patent dispute would be settled minutes before legal court wrangling wrapped up, like most civil suits are, you're likely going to be very disappointed as it doesn't look like a closed-door deal is going to happen in the eleventh hour. While NTP did present a settlement scenario, RIM rejected it for a slew of reasons. Article

RIM gets workaround in place

Research In Motion (RIM), the BlackBerry maker, is polishing off a final version of a workaround plan just in case it has to yank NTP technology from its devices and systems infrastructure. While the technology is the focus of patent hearings and court time, RIM's been busy trying to figure out how to keep its customers happy and on board if it loses the civil battle. To avoid its current situation RIM has very smartly already filed for a patent on its workaround software solution.

For more on the BlackBerry workaround:
- read this TechWorld article
