Former Cisco engineers readies 'firewall killer'

On the premise that traditional firewalls no longer are adequate, five formal Cisco engineers have co-founded a start-up called Rohati Systems to offer more fine-grained control to network resources on a per-user basis. The company will mark its debut with a network-based entitlement control device designed to limit access to applications on the network. It works by checking whether users should be allowed access based on user credentials such as Kerberos, VPN SSL, or Microsoft's NTML. Initial configuration is done by putting the device in monitor mode on the network, where it builds a policy that managers can fine-tune later. The appliance competes with entitlement software from the likes of CA, Oracle, and IBM's Tivoli Software. Currently in beta, it is expected to ship in July.

For more on this device:
- check out this Network World article

Get ready to support the iPhone

The debut of Apple's new iPhone is creating one of the biggest tech buzzes of the new year and tech leaders shouldn't turn a blind eye to the device, since it's likely that a few executives will be grabbing it off the shelves. While there are some big drawbacks, there are also some pretty impressive features that could come in handy for business users, such as phone conferencing features, improved email reading and full-size website views. Experts say tech groups need to be ready to support the iPhone and must figure out how to fit it into the mix, as it may gain a solid user base within the business world.

For more why the iPhone will enter the enterprise:
- read the story at InformationWeek

2007 to be a record year for Microsoft patches

If analysts are right, 2007 could be Microsoft's busiest year for patching vulnerabilities. Security experts expect more patches than ever as flaws are discovered in the new products that Microsoft will debut in 2007. While this year has certainly had its share of patches, 2006 may look dull in comparison to 2007. In fact, this month may be an indicator of what's to come, says a new survey from PatchLink. This year alone, Microsoft released fixes for 133 security issues--almost double the number it issued in 2005.

For more on what's to come in 2007:
- read the news report at InformationWeek

Browser flaw hits IE and Firefox

Since its debut, Mozilla's Firefox browser has been deemed safer and more secure than Internet Explorer by many--but that doesn't mean it's free of vulnerabilities. Researchers have found an issue in the browser's password manager, which lets users store passwords and user names related to specific sites. The vulnerability could allow hackers access to passwords and other confidential information. Mozilla had admitted that the flaw exists, as has Microsoft, since the flaw also affects Internet Explorer. But neither vendor has yet to release a patch.

For more on the new browser security issue:
- check out the news at CIO Today

Symantec wants better sharing from Microsoft

It's clear that Symantec and Microsoft have a tumultuous relationship. For quite a while the security vendor was busy issuing security alerts about the vulnerabilities in Microsoft's soon-to-debut Vista system. Then just recently a Symantec executive was quoted saying the security issues aren't as horrific as previously claimed and backed off the stance. But now Symantec seems peeved over Microsoft's strategy related to software interfaces with Vista and its antispyware program--saying the vendor needs to share better with competitors.

For more on the dysfunctional relationship:
- read this article at CIO Today

Microsoft is busy on a lot of fronts these days, and the latest is virtualization technologies. The vendor is pushing out its Virtual Server product for free--a direct competitive hit against the popular VMware Server offering. It's also working hard to get Windows Hypervisor, an application currently code-named Viridian that runs beneath the operating system and manages resources for multiple virtual machines, out into the market around the same time Novell pushes out its Suse Linux Enterprise Server. But it's likely that Viridian won't debut until after Microsoft's Longhorn Server arrives after a few more years.

Microsoft's latest mini-PC strategy emerges

There was much hype and rumor mongering as Microsoft readied its latest product, codenamed Origami: What the vendor termed as an "ultra-mobile personal computer" (UMPC). But as with most of today's new technology, Microsoft's mini-PC isn't really a new product. Several other vendors are set to debut very similar devices and, as experts explain, there are some big hurdles in having UMPCs take root, from a high price point to a customer's need for yet another mobile device to carry around.
