Do you know what Cobol is and who invented it? How about the first company that issued a security patch as hacking become the norm, not the exception? Do you know where Bill Gates went to high school? Or who really did invent the Internet?

Here at FierceCIO, we're seeking trivia questions from our audience, as well as the right answers from our readers. Send your questions to judi@fiercemarkets.com and we'll start posting them, one at a time. And be sure to send in the answer to your question too, so we can make sure the winner gets the accolades. There's no particular award except for seeing your name in lights at FierceCIO, and what we hope is an enjoyable interchange between the people who know what they are doing and those of us who report about it. -Judi

Intel readies new patch for buggy old patch

Ok, so Microsoft isn't the only vendor patching patches these days. Chip maker Intel is finding itself doing the same after a critical security patch for its Centrino line turned out to be a major memory glutton for PCs, hogging so much memory that it stalled systems. According to Intel, the patch, which was released earlier this month, has a bug in its Proset wireless connection software. While the new patch is due to be released today, other quick fixes are also available.

For more on Intel's patch quirk:
- Read this article at InfoWorld

PowerPoint virus worthy of attention

It hasn't done much damage as yet, but a new PowerPoint virus does hold promise to cause some big headaches within organizations that rely on the Microsoft applications for business operations. Hackers have attached a virus to a PowerPoint file that installs key logging software once the file is opened by a user. Right now the virus is swarming in Asia and comes from a Google address. Security experts are warning tech leaders to caution users from opening PowerPoint files from unknown sources as Microsoft has made it clear it likely won't have a fix until its next security patch release in early August.

For more on the PowerPoint bug:
- check out this article at the BBCNews

Microsoft re-issuing patch to remove conflict issues

Anger and frustration caused by Microsoft's monthly security patch package is prompting the vendor to reissue the security fixes tomorrow as part of its monthly non-security update program. According to the company, it has re-engineered the MS06-015 update to remove the conflict generated with HP and NVIDIA software. This is the second time Microsoft has had to deal with patch conflicts this month. Earlier it had to provide a "compatibility patch" for IE patch MS06-013, which caused havoc for enterprises running Oracle's Siebel 7 application.

For more on the security patch re-do:
- read this article at securityITworld

Microsoft mulls releasing security betas

Microsoft is coming under fire once again for not rushing out a security patch for the latest IE vulnerability, but according to reports it is considering revamping its Patch Tuesday approach in which it releases security updates once a month. The issue is also focusing attention on the validity and security of third-party patches that crop up--one has for the IE flaw and some experts are concerned that the third-party response might not be the secure way to go for various reasons. That's also prompting Microsoft to evaluate whether it should begin issuing security betas when the danger level is high.

For more on Microsoft's patching strategy:
- read this Network World article
