Compulsory Internet filters might be coming to Australia

More details are beginning to emerge from Australia's Cyber-Safety Plan--the AUS$189 million, continent-wide Internet filtering initiative that was first revealed in 2007. And contrary to initial statements made by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), it appears that the "opt out" clause for Australians who don't want to be restrained on the information superhighway might not result in a completely unfiltered connection. According to Internode network engineer Mark Newton, in a conversation with ComputerWorld, users can opt out of the "additional material" blacklist which aims to filter out content that is not appropriate to children. However, the main blacklist covering illegal content cannot be circumvented.
