If you follow the world of mobile web browsers, you'll want to take note of the fact that Opera is preparing to release the latest version of its mobile browser software. Opera Mobile 9.5 comes packed with a host of new features, including an all new rendering engine (allegedly making the browser 2.5 times faster than IE while improving support for AJAX/JavaScript-based dynamic web content), full Flash support, browser history text search and more. Opera is expected to demo the new browser at GSMA in Barcelona next week, with public betas expected for Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux shortly afterward.

For more on the latest version:
- see this Engadget post

Mobile spyware with a new twist

Well, the first mobile spyware attack has now been identified, and not only is it sophisticated but it also offers a new twist. According to security vendor McAfee, the spyware app targets the Symbian mobile phone system and tracks the text messages sent. It also copies the log file of phone numbers stored for both in and outbound calls. The malware features a variant of the MultiDropper mobile phone Trojan--which McAfee has termed the SymbOS/MultiDropper.CG.

For more on the newest mobile phone threat:
- read the news at Vnunet

SPOTLIGHT: Smartphones are secure, says vendor

One of the big topics with smartphones has been the security issue--or insecurity issue, as some would view it. But according to a leading vendor in the market, the security issues and concerns are being overblown and exaggerated. Symbian's executive VP of Research says security concerns are a factor only if a company doesn't do its due diligence with laying in security basics. He goes as far to say there is actually real no true threat from the use of smart phones. Article

Get ready for a new mobile operating system option, this one from Microsoft. "Crossbow" will feature instant messaging capability. Moving into direct competition with industry leaders such as Symbian, the vendor says the instant messaging functionality is part of a new version of Office Communicator, an Office 2007 communications application. No release date has been set as yet, according to the vendor.

App developers avoiding Palm

If your company is a Palm enterprise, you might want to start reviewing that decision. Some major application makers are not eager to build for the device, which hasn't gotten a major upgrade in two years. Mobile application developers are steadily moving over to Symbian and Windows Mobile devices when it comes to product development. That's because both are optimized for video and multimedia, which the vendors view as the next big product and services wave for today's mobile user.

For more on the state of Palm:
- read this article at News.com

Better mobile security tools coming to market

In the face of the growing number of malware and threats to the mobile device world and wireless infrastructure, vendors are pushing out new protection and security applications. One of the latest is from TrendMicro, which just announced its Mobile Security 2.0 software that continually updates virus protection on Windows Mobile and Symbian handsets. The new product illustrates how network security is extending way beyond the enterprise brick and mortar environment, say vendors.
