Lawsuit tries to block HP-EDS merger

There are many questions regarding the announced sale of EDS to HP, including what it means for their respective tech staffs, the direction of the new merged company and the new shape of global IT services landscape. But some people are trying to put a stop to this marriage before it is even consummated.

The Utah-based Intermountain Ironworkers Trust Fund has filed suit alleging the sale is unfair to EDS shareholders. A similar suit by an EDS shareholder has been filed in Delaware. It remains unclear how the lawsuits will develop or whether they will slow or impact the merger in any way.

With dozens of books on the subject of innovation, and growing pressure from CEOs to see more of it from their IT organizations, one expert asks: do people really get the "so what" factor? Mateen Greenway, an EDS Fellow based in London, and chief architect for the EDS EMEA Manufacturing Industry Affinity Group, believes that many C-level execs miss the point of innovation. He explains that innovation is not about just coming up with clever ideas. "Creativity is about coming up with the idea, innovation is about applying the idea to obtain value," or about "bringing creative ideas to life." He has come up with a set of principles to determine whether your company has an innovative culture. To start, you have to ask yourself some tough questions like:

Do you really know what business you are in, and what you are trying to achieve in the future?
Do you understand where the value in your company comes from, and can you articulate what you want to achieve through innovation?

In terms of who innovates, "Innovation teams mix together many disciplines and this requires the participation of people who are pre-disposed to inter-disciplinary working. Often these people have degrees and experience in many different subjects, cultures and disciplines and have worked in different specializations," he writes in CIOUpdate. He also adds that innovators are made, not born--meaning there's hope for all of us.

Defining the role of the CIO

Unlike other C-level officials, the role of the CIO is loosely defined and can take different forms in different organizations. Some CIOs are charged with integrating disparate systems, for example, and some aren't. Some are charged with leading innovation, while others must take on the burden of identity management. Still others focus on privacy, managing the technical infrastructures for a global enterprise, security, cutting-edge technologies or any combination of the above. To do the job well, CIOs must understand that the role is a multidimensional one, and one that is subject to change over time.

Dell hires on some powerful help

Dell, after suffering some attrition and top management losses, is shoring up its executive ranks by pulling in some well known tech industry players. The second-largest PC manufacturer has hired on a former EDS executive VP to lead its computer services business, as well as ex-HP honchos to lead procurement and hardware sales. Analysts say the new blood could go a long way in revamping Dell's traditional business strategies, which are showing some wear and tear.

Offshoring could impact military defense systems

It seemed like a smart move at the time--outsourcing and offshoring government software development to save money--but now Uncle Sam is reviewing the decision and the impact it could have down the road. It seems that the potential for embedded malicious code and system tinkering could have a dramatic effect on defense programs and systems. A task force has been studying the issue and is expected to release a recommendation for ensuring better security soon.

Business is tough for pretty much anyone these days, but IT outsourcers are feeling the heat--despite statistics that show more enterprises are grabbing services and off-shoring non-critical IT work. One of the outsourcing industry leaders, EDS, is in particularly rocky shape as it didn't go offshore fast enough and competitors are taking huge chunks of its client base and revenue stream away. But the firm is quickly making up for those business stumbles--spending over $300 million for an Indian-based services company and aiming to pump up its India workforce from just a few thousand staffers to over 20,000 employees by the end of this year.
