Cisco adds a new security tool

There's always something new in the market to protect the network. And last week, Cisco announced its new technology called Trusted Security that combines identity and role-based security measures for enterprise networks. "Customers are demanding a highly secure way to expand their businesses and compliance policies," said Jayshree Ullal, senior vice president of the Data Center, Switching, and Security Technology Group at Cisco. The next generation of security software has an increasingly complex job as computers go mobile and global. Cisco's new software will provide a more secure arena for users. And it comes not a moment too soon. Zeus Kerravala, an analyst at Yankee Group, called Cisco TrustSec the evolution of self-protecting networks that's needed for the global and mobile world. "Identity is important not only from a security standpoint, but it will also be used to define a user's context, which includes presence and other information," Kerravala said.

For more on Cisco's newest security tool:
- Read this CIO Today Article

Protecting the network perimeter is more important than ever before, thanks to the proliferation of smartphones, laptops and other mobile devices in the workplace. The use of mobile equipment is highest among executives, but use by workers at all levels is expected to increase significantly over the next few years. Because mobile devices have enjoyed a slow but steady growth in the workplace, they have largely flown under the radar, and according to recent research, nearly half of companies have no security and compliance measures in place to protect data on those devices, despite the fact that some of those devices store critical corporate data.

Mobile security tool for SMBs

In the wake of recent news reports about increasing mobile device security concerns comes an announcement of a new security tool from NetMax Communications. The DataTurf system features an encrypted VPN which can secure connections over potentially unsecured public hotspots and networks--it drives the network traffic back to the Internet over a fixed broadband connection. According to the vendor, it's a great, inexpensive solution for small to medium sized enterprises trying to open up more mobility options for employees without putting the corporate data network at risk.

For more on the mobile security device:
- read the article at CSO

Security vendors irate with Microsoft

Just when you thought that Microsoft was going to play nice in the security tool sandbox, the vendor has thrown down its shovel and pail and walked away from former pals Symantec and McAfee. The two security developers were jumping for joy last week, after learning that Microsoft would meet with third-party vendors to talk about Vista integration and to offer up access to the upcoming system. But that didn't happen. It seems that all that nice talk was "hollow," says McAfee, which claims that Microsoft is staying true to its intention to "wall off" the kernel in the 64-bit version of Vista. Microsoft denies the charges.

The need for policy with security surveillance

Everywhere you look there seems to be a camera--in the convenience store, at the stop light and nowadays within the maze of the business enterprise. Physical security and the ability to track employee operations are two top reasons more companies are plugging in video surveillance. The fact that the technology is cheaper than ever is letting even the small to medium enterprise take advantage of the security tool. But before you turn those cameras on, find out what you need to do first in terms of setting policy and educating your workforce.

With laptop thefts on the rise in the business sector as well as the federal government, a number of tech leaders are looking into security solutions for road warrior devices. The biggest trend is to use more than one security tool like a combination of encryption, Internet-based tracking and "kill" switches to help thwart data theft. It's well worth the time to take a good look at the various tools now available to determine which will best suit your enterprise laptop security needs.

Choosing a good application security tool

Anyone building a application knows the value of quality assurance testing. But many organizations may not realize the additional aspect of testing a new application's security power. As experts relate, today's QA teams need to bring security to the top of the agenda and make sure that new code and software development is free of SQL injection and cross-site scripting. The first step is finding the right security testing tool and an automated product is a good choice. Find out the 11 questions you need to answer before finalizing the product buy.

For more on a good application security tool:
- take a look at this article at Securityitworld.com

Securing instant messaging is mandate

For all the good that instant messaging can do for an enterprise--speeding up communication and decision-making and allowing collaborative discussion in real-time--it's clearly got its downsides, as tech leaders well know. Viruses spread faster in IM, and the messaging application can be tricky to support if there isn't a standard application and policy use in place. The goal is to realize that IM has to be managed and cared for just like any other software application that IT has deployed. The first step is finding out how it's being used in your organization and what it's being used for by staffers. Then it's time to decide what to standardize on and what IM functionalities the application must provide the user base. And given the increasing threats coming through the IM channel you might also want to plop in a specific IM security tool before unleashing the messaging application.
