Survey: Find a better way to manage risk

A new survey from Quocirca finds that executives say software development is critical to their businesses, but most are not doing enough to build security into their applications. The survey of 250 organizations in Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. found that people are relying on software applications, including some where they modify the code. There's a better way to do this: build security into applications at the design stage and not when the end product has been installed.

For more on this critical issue:
- See this IT-Observer article

AMD demos 45nm CPUs

It's been a long time coming but AMD finally got real with its 45nm lineup this week, more than a full year after announcing that they were developing CPUs that would be manufactured using a 45nm process. The company showed off two quad-core chips at the CeBIT conference in Germany--one server part and one desktop chip--both of which will ship at some point during the second half of 2008. At the moment, the server chip is going by the codename "Shanghai," while the desktop part is referred to as "Deneb," though we're quite sure they'll come up with something a little catchier by the time these products launch.

For more on the 45nm CPUs:
- see this ComputerWorld article

If you run the sort of IT department that likes to deploy Ubuntu machines to end users, you'll likely be happy to hear that Dell is expanding their pre-loaded Ubuntu program this week with a new laptop. The low-end Inspiron 1525 notebook is now available pre-loaded with Ubuntu 7.10 (aka "Gutsy Gibbon") and DVD-playback to boot. Available now in Europe (the U.K., France, Spain and Germany) and later in the month in the U.S.

Are you a workaholic?

Do you think you are a workaholic? While many CIOs and other IT executives think that work is the center of their lives, more and more Americans are saying that work is not their life, according to a new Monster.com survey. The online poll, conducted from Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, asked people in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany to choose the phrase that best described their lives: "I work to live" or "I live to work." And the surprising results? Nearly 80 percent of American respondents selected "I worked to live," while only 22 percent selected "live to work." Norma Gaffin, director of content for Monster.com., says Americans of all ages are learning something about life from Generation Y. "There's so much pressure [for Americans] to be defined by their work," she says. "We're learning from Generation Y that work isn't all there is."

For more on how not to be a workaholic:
- See this CIO Magazine article

Bugs could halt Linux kernel development

While recent statistics clearly show that open source technology is gaining respectability and adoption in enterprises, it seems to be getting buggier of late, according to the Linux kernel keeper. Speaking at a Germany-based conference, Andrew Morton, who is the "lead maintainer" of the Linux production kernel, said more flaws and vulnerabilities are cropping up in the 2.6 version. He is considering stopping development until repair and patch work can keep up with the bugs. Morton says the increasing defect rate is getting too far ahead of the fix work.

For more on bug issues with Linux:
- read this News.com article
