Lenovo ThinkPad lineup leaks

You know you're in IT if the prospect of new ThinkPads sends shivers of joy down your spine. So steel yourself, friends, for here comes a whole new flock of slimmed-down international business machines. The folks over at Gizmodo got their hands on some leaked details pertaining to Lenovo's forthcoming ThinkPad lineup, and it looks like the svelte X300 was just the tip of the iceberg. Lenovo plans to launch an entire line of X-branded machines, adding a 12" X200, a 14.1" X400 and a 15.4" X500 to the mix. All of the machines will be similarly spec'd out, which means 45nm mobile Penryns, 6MB of L2 cache and both HSDPA and EV-DO connectivity, making the new ThinkPads truly carrier agnostic. But that's not all folks: there are also major changes on the horizon for the R and T series lappies, as well as another new lineup--the W series. Scattered across the various lines are goodies like turbo memory, SSDs, Blu-ray drives, LED-backlit displays, GPS, WiMAX and Wireless USB.

For all the gory details:
- check out this Gizmodo article

The value of becoming technology agnostic

Becoming truly innovative in how you adopt maintain technologies requires an unbiased, agnostic approach to technology. Look at the technology landscape, assess your organization's needs, and then base your decisions on goals and potential outcomes. Also, research technologies not only before you adopt them, but also while you're using them; don't get emotionally attached to any one particular technology; and continuously research competing technologies, comparing them to those that you're currently using.

Read more about becoming technology agnostic:
- read the blog of David Lee King

Enterprises consider a move to the Mac

Long considered the domain of die-hard Apple fans and organizations focused on creativity, Macs are becoming a real consideration for organizations of all types. Part of the reason is Apple's consistent defense against the viruses and malware that have plagued Windows-based PCs for years. In addition, many corporate applications have been ported to W3-compliant Web services that are operating system-agnostic and perhaps more importantly, the Mac platform has moved to Windows-compatible Intel chips, which are cheaper and more powerful than older PowerPC processors. Mac enterprise administration has also has become more mainstream and inter-operable with Microsoft's active Directory. In short, it's a completely viable alternative for enterprises today. In general, there is little difference between Apple's enterprise and consumer PCs, so you can't go too wrong. All of Apple's machines are ready to move into the enterprise, depending on the job at hand. It's a simple and elegant product lineup, highly customizable, and will be Apple's seed into the business market--if IT decision-makers can get over their prejudice against equipment that's traditionally been aimed at consumers.

To learn more about the pros and cons of moving to the Mac:
- read the blog at Digit

Gartner: Time for CIOs to prove value

IT, as an entity, is in big trouble if one research firm's predictions prove true. Gartner says there's a huge disconnect between the economy and IT spend, and the fact that tech teams aren't proving that they're a compelling business unit will lead to an agnostic view of IT, which doesn't bode well for CIOs. The solution, according to the firm's IT Scenario report, is for everyone in IT (from the security level to the executive level to the help desk team) to prove their value and contribution in the next three years.

For more on proving IT's worth:
- read this InfoWorld article
