A new tape drive is rarely exciting news, but every rule has an exception. It's the new IBM System Storage TS1120 which includes built-in automatic data encryption. The drive's tapes can store up to 1.5TB of compressed data, transfers data at 104MBps and supports tape libraries from both IBM and Sun Microsystems' StorageTek division. The idea of automatic encryption is fairly innovative--making the tapes into doorstops if lost or stolen. The drive costs $35,000.

StorageTek's TekCare services are now merged with Sun Microsystem's SunSpectrum services, Sun officials announced. Sun acquired Storage Technology Corp. a year ago for $4.1 billion. StorageTek customers will now have access to Sun's vendor integration technologies, plus access to educational tools, troubleshooting libraries and technicians. Officials added StorageTek's 2,000 support workers were mostly unaffected by Sun's recent layoffs.

Sun Microsystems, although doing well with its recent lines of AMD Opteron-based servers and storage arrays, still lost $301 million (9 cents per share) in its fourth quarter--quite a change from a profit of $50 million (1 cent per share) last year. Revenue was up to $3.83 billion from $2.97 billion last year, but that's largely because of the StorageTek acquisition. Executives said a recent restructuring caused the change. Sun's overall situation is stabilizing, they said.

Sun's StorageTek division and Imation are developing a 75GB half-inch backup tape for the T9840 drive series. These are high-speed, high-reliability tapes for mainframes and top-end servers. They're certainly reaching any capacity records--the tapes are still 53 percent more substantial than the current 40GB versions. They also have some innovations, such as the actual media spinning through air pockets to minimize friction, increase speed and improve longevity.

As we noted in the December 23 issue, there were "billions and billions" spent on enterprise IT mergers in 2005. They kept happening right into December, so why should anyone expect them to slow down now? Skeptics would say that there are simply fewer companies left to be bought and that all the industry giants pretty much filled their holes by now. So look for mergers and acquisitions focusing on market share growth (such as the Sun/StorageTek deal) and others focusing on creative …

Sun Microsystems had said they would announce more details of the $4.1 billion StorageTek acquisition today, with the deal done. However, regarding the overlap of the two company's disk arrays and management software, it will be two more months before they announce what stays and what goes. (Sun calls it "product collaboration.") Meanwhile, StorageTek CEO Pat Martin resigned, officials said.
