Next week, Qlusters will release open-source provisioning software called OpenQRM Pro. The software automates approval, provisioning, monitoring, reporting and even deprovisioning of all data center resources. It will integrate with LDAP and virtualization servers. It works on Linux, Windows, Solaris and FreeBSD. Since it's open-source, it can be customized and shared cost-free.

An organization called Simply RISC is the first to ship an open-source microprocessor based on Sun's T1 design using the General Public License. By following Sun's internal standards, the core (known as S1) will in theory be compatible with future versions from other groups and can run Solaris or Linux. Sun Microsystems officials said they're finally willing to open source the Java programming language. But they're going to wait however long it takes for the developers and lawyers to agree on the details. Many outsiders expect Sun to release Java with non-standard public licenses, as they did with Solaris, instead of with the common General Public License. Also expected soon is a version of Red Hat Linux for Sun's Sparc computers.

Intel later today will announce a new brand of business-focused chip technologies, similar to its Centrino brand for mobile products and new Viiv brand for consumer entertainment. The new brand, its name not yet revealed, will be announced with Symantec--so it's reasonable to expect a security and virtualization pitch. Will it be fluff or serious innovation to help Intel recapture lost market share from rival AMD? We'll find out soon.
