Higgins ID project gets new roadmap
New software for integrating identity, profile and relationship data from disparate systems is scheduled to ship next summer from a group of researchers at IBM, Novell, Parity Communications and others. They'll first have middleware, dubbed the Identity Attribute Service, which merges unrelated and geographically widespread data into a single virtual credential. The project team plans to support a variety of industry standards, platforms and programming languages.

Using POSIX in Windows for UNIX services
Windows shops that occasionally need Unix tools might be well served by Posix. Posix is middleware that makes Unix applications think they're running on a Unix operating system when it's actually Windows. This used to be called Interix, but with the advent of the Vista era, Microsoft is renaming it Subsystem for Unix Applications. That's not as much fun to say but it requires less explanation. Name aside, Posix has some quirks, but it also has some handy tools for porting your own …

Open code is hardly just about Linux, so IBM will invest heavily to make open-source a serious part of its software and services portfolio, officials said at the LinuxWorld conference. As for Linux itself, IBM has 15,000 business customers and is also …

Oracle is giving customers a new business process management suite, but this time it's by licensing, not by acquisition. The suite will be an Oracle-branded version of IDS Scheer's product called Aris Platform. It will integrate with Oracle's existing Fusion middleware and Process Manager software, officials explained. (Why not an acquisition? Because IDS is also a big partner of Oracle rival SAP.)

Salesforce.com syncs into big biz with SAP R/3
Salesforce.com, in its constant battle to move up-market, is now introducing middleware for connecting its hosted CRM software with SAP's R/3 resource planning software. The upgrade will be available July 30. That feature works in conjunction with the new Salesforce Summer '06 edition, which is basically version 20 of the software.
