The clock is ticking for retail, enterprise and OEM sales of Windows XP but if the rumor mill--and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer--are to be believed, the plucky OS might just be sticking around a bit longer. Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows recently published an email that was supposedly penned by a Dell representative, which con tainted the following tidbit: "Please be aware that Dell will continue to offer XP Pro preloaded through 2012. We will ship XP Professional on Dell Optiplex, Latitude and Precision machines with a free upgrade path to Windows Vista." Hmm. Meanwhile, Ballmer was recently heard to remark that "If customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter," whatever that means. Could Windows XP get a last-minute stay of execution from Microsoft? The company's customers sure seem to hope so.

Steve Ballmer needs to wake up and try to understand the real needs of business owners. I DO NOT need a windows media player or dashboard, none of the cute scrolling. I do not need to access "youtube" or facebook at work. I do not need webcam at work! I want windows that won't lock me out of my own network and domains. . . I need an OS that does not start freaking out every time I have to use it. I want an OS that does not hog up 99% of CPU time and 100%of memory for 20 minutes after it is booted even with 4 GB of RAM on a high end machine. Ballmer, please get real. Get some Linux and Apple programmers to join your programming team. More importantly visit healthcare professionals like me who have to struggle with lousy newer Microsoft OS like vista and bad support for decent old Microsoft products like win2000. . The least you can do is open up the source code mess so that some of the newer versions of Linux like Ubuntu can work on Vista. Until you do this right, make sure both windows 2000 and Windows XP are properly supported.
