Write a Twitter policy for your office

It's time to set policy for Twitter use at work and roll it into your office code of business conduct.

Should all Twitter usage be for work, or is personal tweeting allowed? How do you make sure that a tweet does not hurt the company or give up sensitive information? How can you be sure that an employee is not wasting time tweeting?

"Some people make the argument: If companies aren't screening phone conversations, why would they worry about Twitter so much?" Caroline Dangson, a social media analyst at IDC, tells CIO.com.

CIO.com offers a few tips for smart tweeting policies:

  • Update your company's code of business conduct.
  • Identify who has a Twitter account at your company.
  • Employees should put disclaimers on their policies.
  • Work with employees on guidelines.
  • Check out guidelines used by other companies.
