As fast as enterprise technologies are evolving, the ways in which people work are changing too. Over the past year, companies spent more time facilitating the use of smartphones and tablet computers as mobile apps grew in number and sophistication. Web-based marketing tools and social media gave conventional marketing methods a run for their money, and the number of telecommuting positions soared, reports Shane O'Neill at CIO magazine. O'Neill looks at six workplace trends that are sure to persist in 2011.

Shane's article notes cloud computing, mobility and social media (prerequisites, evidently, for any article on future IT trends), but it also looks at a couple less-discussed developments. For one, traditional resumes may go the way of the dinosaur as more employers look for digital portfolios, as well as online references and work samples, from potential hires.

Advances in shared online workspaces, real-time collaboration tools and other communications technologies will make it increasingly efficient to employ remote workers. On-site employment was stagnant this year, but jobs based online grew steadily, O'Neill reports. The online job website Elance posts an average of 400,000 jobs each year.
