Will the exec suite embrace social networking?

You've rung in the New Year, and with it will come new decisions for every IT executive. After making economic decisions for the year ahead and ensuring security is at a high level, social media should be near the top of a CIO's to-do list. How can an exec use it as a valuable marketing tool and as an internal communication mechanism?

There are many surveys and reports to help IT executives understand the importance of social media. CIO.com posted one upcoming survey by Forrester Researcher Nigel Fenwick that looks at the potential of social media to connect people worldwide and asks IT professionals to participate in a poll to get a better read on what is taking place.

You have to admit that social networking came on the scene in 2009 with a massive burst of creativity. Companies are still trying to find their way through this new medium, and it's probably a good idea to get on the train instead of letting it pass you by.

The Forrester survey is seeking to measure the following issues:

  • The reach of social media through social connections
  • The awareness of social media policies in the workplace
  • The level of usage of social media in the workplace
  • The perception of social media's value in business

The results should be interesting and help provide insights into current practices and thinking.
