Where the jobs are: Try information security
It's still a rough and tumble IT job market out there, but there are plenty of IT jobs in information security, according to Foote Partners, LLC, a research firm that focuses on IT compensation and professional workforce trends. And some of the places the company suggests targeting include specific information security positions, including architects, analysts and administrators.
"The positive story for North American IT labor--and a better indicator of overall performance in the IT workforce--is demand trends for specific categories of IT skills," David Foote, CEO and Chief Research Officer tells GovInfoSecurity.com.
"Our trends survey research indicates that the recession has had only a minimal impact on demand for critical IT skills in the areas such as architecture, business process, information security, communications, e-commerce and several ERP and infrastructure specializations," he adds.
That means it's time for you to specialize if you haven't already. Figure out what kind of IT job you are looking for and how to get there. If you need certifications, add them to your resume. If you need more experience, go get it.
IT security is about far more than focusing on the firewall and antivirus updates, these days. Many companies are not properly protecting their operations or don't have the money to do it right. It takes a super IT security person to work his or her way through the problems and come up with the right solution. Foote says the hottest roles include IT experts who can use business, technology and regulatory compliance experience and knowledge to help drive profit.
"For example, with vulnerabilities now rapidly shifting from the operating system to the web browser," Foote tells GovInfoSecurity.com, "demand for proactive secure software and web systems development is growing, driving skills acquisition in access controls, data integrity, system integration and data loss prevention as well as solutions requiring specialized Java, .Net, C++, and injection coding."
