What Obama means for tech

The dust has not yet settled on the presidential election, but it is clear that President-elect Barack Obama will have plenty of work to do.

On his list is technology and moving the United States further along on the 21st century path for IT. NetworkWorld.com listed just a few issues that Obama intends to move forward with immediately. Much of it won't be a surprise to the IT world, which has been waiting for plenty of enhancements to help the tech world hum.

Here are a few basic proposals that still need to be fleshed out:

  • Double federal funding for basic research
  • Implement a permanent R&D tax credit
  • Make sure every American household, school, hospital and library has broadband access
  • Improve standards for broadband speeds
  • Encourage science and tech education
  • Further requirements for electronic medical records
  • A chief technology officer for the United States

Don't be surprised if this list grows longer with even more tech-related initiatives, as the Obama transition picks up speed. Remember, one way Obama has made history is by harnessing the power of the Internet in his campaign to reach out to voters and organize their ranks.
