Wave of retiring IT pros on horizon

Over the next few years it may get harder to find the IT talent you need, largely because Baby Boomers are preparing to retire. Examining the results of two surveys, CIOInsight's Dennis McCafferty looks at why there may be a retirement crisis on the horizon even though the tough economy has driven many workers to postpone their golden years.

In the 60-plus age group, fewer workers this year than last year say they are postponing retirement for financial reasons, according to a recent survey from CareerBuilder. More than half of the workers in this age group plan to retire within three to four years. Within the next six years, 73 percent expect to retire.

A survey by National Association of State Chief Information Officers shows that state CIOs are particularly concerned about looming retirements. Nearly one-third of state IT workers will be eligible to retire within five years, according to association estimates. A little more than half of state CIOs say that they have a hard time filling vacancies, largely because of salaries and pay structures. The most challenging positions to fill are in security, project management, application development, architecture, and analysis and design.
