Verizon bringing FiOS technology to the enterprise
Verizon is quietly working to bring its popular residential FiOS high-speed Internet service to the enterprise. Marketing will start in 2009 and will be directed at federal, corporate and university customers. The technology will be based on the same passive optical networking (PON) used for its current FiOS offerings, and involves PON equipment being installed in office buildings and campuses. In fact, the first installation is already slated for this coming September. One of the key advantages of PON technology is that it reduces electricity usage in office buildings by up to 95 percent when compared with traditional copper-based networks. The PON system also supports familiar network protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet, and because it is fiber, represents lots of excess capability for future expansion.
