Twitter becomes a security risk

Twitter started out as a novel idea, and in just three years, it has exploded. Along the way, it's become a magnet for malware. Twitter has come of age, according to an article from CSOonline.com. It hasn't had an easy time growing up, either. Like MySpace and Facebook, it has been bullied by phishers and other hackers.

And the hack attacks are getting pretty sophisticated. In January, a Twitter hack compromised the accounts of 33 high-profile users, including President Obama and Brittany Spears.

In April, a Twitter worm, known as "Mikeyy" or "StalkDaily," was created by a 17-year-old. Twitter shut it down, but it raises just more questions and forces Twitter to keep looking over its shoulder for other attacks.

Following the worm attacks, cofounder Biz Stone wrote on the company blog, "Twitter takes security very seriously and we will be following up on all fronts."

While it will take some growing pains to get it right for Twitter users, here are a few words of advice: You wouldn't leave a phone message that you'll be out of town. Don't tweet your vacation plans either, the article advises.
