Turnaround: IRS ditches cell phone tax plan
![]()

It only took a few days for the Internal Revenue Service to change its mind. And it's a good thing that it did.
The IRS is now recommending that a complicated law that allows the taxation of personal cell phone use on a business phone be repealed. The intention was to tax text messaging--something that has become such a regular part of everyone's lives.
Only last week, the IRS requested public comments on ways to impose a tax on text messages from business cell phones.
We applaud this change of heart. And we think that sometimes IRS officials spend too much time behind closed doors and not enough time out in the real world.
