Toshiba unveils Android-powered Folio 100 tablet
The tablet war has begun in earnest, as Toshiba unveiled its Folio 100 at the IFA 2010 consumer electronics exhibition. The Android-based device sports a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600, as well as an impressive array of technical features. A NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor runs under the hood of the Folio 100, which comes with 16GB of memory, supports Bluetooth 2.1, has a HDMI-output, two USB ports, SD memory card slot, 802.11b/g/n wireless and 3G mobile data connectivity.
With a weight of just 760 grams, the Folio was tested to last seven hour while performing an assortment of tasks such as web surfing or playing a video. While the build quality is great, Jamie Pert of Product Reviews observed that the software is still not ready for prime-time. On the con side, a major disadvantage of its screen resolution would be its lack of access to the Android Market, says Pert. Instead, the Folio supports an "App Place," which his part of the Marketplace of Toshiba.
Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the Toshiba Folio 100 will appear in Europe later this year. This appears to be the strategy of various tablet manufacturers--to get into Europe while the iPad (hopefully) is not too entrenched--before entering the U.S. market later.
