Things employees do that make CIOs cringe

You can write the finest usage policies in the world, but there will still be employees who take good IT and do bad things with it. CIOUpdate's Don Reisinger presents 11 of the most cringe-inducing employee behaviors related to using technology.

Password stupidity tops Reisinger's list. Despite incessant warning, cajoling and needling about proper password security, some employees don't use passwords with their devices, and others use one password to cover all of their accounts.

Then there are the email-related snafus. There is a subset of workers out there who evidently cannot resist clicking on links in emails no matter how suspicious they might look, and there are those who are vulnerable to a host of phishing scams.

Social media and smartphones present myriad opportunities for losing sensitive data via employee error, which is why large organizations tend to have put policies in place to govern usage. But the percentage of employees who have read the policies, and employees willing to comply, tells another story.

Apps for mobile devices and games for PCs bring their own set of potential threats, especially when employees aren't on the lookout for malicious code that may come with them.
